The effective Language Teacher by Carvalho
Read the two texts in the links above (just click and download them). Then think of a former teacher of English language you had in the past or have at the present moment and list his/her best characteristics. Post your commentaries and discuss with your colleagues why these characteristics were/are so important for your development.
Make sure to post your comments until our next class, 3rd April. This activity will count as a regular participation in the class! Let's do it now?
I totally agreed that acquiring is different from learning. I also agreed with the three basic attributes of teaching, but I'd put 'em in a different order, since I think the romance comes first and inspires creativity and insight... Loved "MAKING ENDS MEET IN THE CLASSROOM: THE ATTRIBUTES OF THE GOOD LANGUAGE TEACHER" by Vilson J. Leffa
ResponderExcluirThe texts are interesting because they give us understanding and enthusiasm at the same time. Very good three attributes cited by Leffa Vilson, as well as what Lenno said, I think that romance should come first, and then comes creativity, because it is essential for development a good class.
ResponderExcluirIn fact,I agree. An ideal teacher is friendly(happy), is creative: uses varied activities and techniques ,qualities and other, for to facilitate student learning.
ResponderExcluirNow that I come to think about that, reading the Leffa notes... It's hard to really decide what's more important, I do think There's no way one can work on a class without insight, romance or creativity. I can't even decide the order, since different factors act on different people. Other fact of the classroom that I think is important is the fact that the teacher can change it, but not totally.. learning is not a school-only based activity, in order to really learn something, the pupil needs to take it to his life as a whole. Now comes the question: Is that a teacher's task to make the student think that way? Justify!
ResponderExcluirI believe that a good language teacher should have the following characteristics: friendly, creative, has a good class plan, class management, patience, adaptable, knows the target language, integrate the four habilities e knows about grammar. These features make the student learning easier and more useful.
ResponderExcluirKamilla, I do belive those are the characteristics for a good teacher in any area of knowledge. I was more concerned about how to use the creativity, because a cunning teacher can still make some mistakes, like losing control of the classroom. Iron grip or gentle touch, that's my greatest doubt.
ResponderExcluirThe time doesn't help a language teacher to use his creativity too...
ExcluirI think that when we love what we do, we will have creativity to do what we love in such different ways. In our case, if we love English and been a teacher, we will able to create many forms to do what we love, and this way involving our students into our ways to work. I do think it's necessary to be a friendly with the students, but more importante is to know how to teach and the subject, because if we are just a friend of our students, they will say what we are used to listen: "he's good as a person, but as a teacher..."
ResponderExcluirIgnore the mistakes, I forgot to correct it before post :/
ExcluirAlso, a complete teacher should know that the knowledge is not only on the books, you have to build something out of your own mind, working on the needs of the classroom, because latelly the books are way to advanced in comparison to the students, they seen to be developed to people who already work english since the first educational years.
ResponderExcluirBut Michel, we can't forget the real situation on the schools, it's hard to love something when there's no positive feedback. I'm learning that the hard way! Another important thing for a good teacher is to have a good coordination team in the school.
ResponderExcluirI'm learning it in the hard way too. But there's some students interesteds in English Language and that's why I will keep trying...
ExcluirI never said there were no reasons to keep trying, I just said it's a lot less poetic than you guys make it look like.
ResponderExcluirOK, ALL THE POSSIBLE VIRTUES AND GOOD CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ENGLISH TEACHER WERE MENTIONED. BUT HOW ABOUT THE BAD ONES? WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
ExcluirOK, ALL THE POSSIBLE VIRTUES AND GOOD CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ENGLISH TEACHER WERE MENTIONED. BUT HOW ABOUT THE BAD ONES? WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
ResponderExcluirA bad English teacher is the professional that don’t respect the student and his ability of to learn. The teacher has to know the necessities of each one of yours learners and to look a best way to solve the problem.
ResponderExcluirI think a good teacher is just that which is committed to their profession and their students, because a good teacher regardless of the situation which is, he should to search the best way to help their students.
ResponderExcluirA bad teacher do not observe the students necessities and characteristics, do not respect and do not try hard to improve the quality of his class like search, study, things like that.
ResponderExcluirOther terrible characteristc of a bad teacher is the fact of a teacher do not make the class atracttive, like to call the students attention, is easy to see teachers with classes so boring that students almost sleep during it
ResponderExcluirA good teacher is the guy that really knows his stuff. He must reflect about his practice and try to improve it.
